Dresden

The capital of Saxony on the Elbe bank is one of Europe’s greenest cities. Especially at the Dresden Elbe Valley Basin, which is an UNESCO world heritage, you can assure yourself of this fact. For art and culture lovers the city offers endless opportunities – that is why it is worldwide known as metropolis of operas.

The baroque Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche), the reconstructed landmark of the city, is located in the centre of the Old Town at Neumarkt. On a municipal walk in the near surroundings you explore the Roman Catholic Church Hofkirche – the largest church in Saxony, the famous Semper Opera House (Semperoper) as well as Dresden Castle (Residenzschloss Dresden). In this castle you can admire the exhibition Green Vault (Historisches Grünes Gewölbe), which shows amongst others the treasure of the former king of Saxony. From here it’s just a few steps to the baroque Zwinger Palace. You should plan minimum half a day for the visit of this grand area.

The oldest Christmas Market of Germany, the Striezelmarkt which is located on the Old Market is worldwide known and fascinates not only the young visitors of Dresden in the pre-Christmas period. You should try a taste of the Original Dresdner Christstollen.

The Äußere Neustadt (one of Dresden’s districts) is the hot spot in the evening because of its popular pubs. Throughout the city there are lots of restaurants serving the solid dishes of the Saxon cooking, but also lovers of the Bohemian plain fare can get their money worth e.g. in the baroque palace (Palais), which is located in the district Innere Neustadt.

The A&O HOTEL and HOSTEL Dresden has an excellent transport connection at the main station and is the perfect starting point for discovering Dresden by day or night.
