Deutsches Theater

The Deutsches Theater is unique in the German theatre landscape. Established in 1896 as a stage for spoken drama by young Naturalist playwrights, the theatre evolved only one year later into the Bavarian Royal Residence's most glamorous variety venue. With only a few interruptions, the repertoire of Munich's second-largest theatre (with approximately 1600 seats) has since been dominated by international musical entertainment – a theatrical genre which the theatre is to this very day decidedly committed to. The list of stars who have performed at the Deutsches Theater is long and goes from the Bavarian comedian Karl Valentin to the magician David Copperfield and from Josephine Baker to Richard Chamberlain.

Since 1982, the Deutsches Theater has belonged to the city and has presented touring shows and performers of international class. The hottest Broadway shows tour here, as do the most popular musicals from London's West End. Stunning new productions from all over the globe often stage their German or even European premiere here. Spectacular dance productions, modern entertainment and rip-roaring live music shows top off the diverse programme.

Opera Houses

Music is an international language, and the music theatre wonderfully unites it with the theatrical - so whether or not you understand German, as an opera lover you will feel at home in Munich immediately. Since state theatres are subsidised by the Free State of Bavaria, they employ internationally well-known artists but sell tickets at very reasonable prices. Students, for example, can get regular tickets for the State Opera one hour before the performance starts for about €8, which includes performances during the famous annual opera festival. So especially if you have never been to an opera before, you should seize this opportunity! Below are the addresses of some of Munich's music theatres. Tickets can be ordered online, but also by telephone. Please remember the prefix 089 if you are calling from outside the Munich telephone district and +49 89 if you are calling from abroad.
