Hamburg is Germany’s musical capital

Hamburg is many things at once: a port city, a cultural hub, home to the Reeperbahn, and for almost four decades now, Germany’s undisputed musical capital. Anyone spending a weekend in the Hanseatic city to experience one of these major stage productions is in for not only an unforgettable show, but also one of Europe’s liveliest cities – and with the four a&o Hostels in Hamburg, affordable, centrally located accommodation from which everything can be easily explored.

Hamburg and musicals: A success story since 1986

The relationship between Hamburg and the musical began in 1986, when Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats” celebrated its German premiere at the Operettenhaus on Spielbudenplatz. At the time, no one had expected that an entire audience would travel from far and wide – just to see a stage show. Yet that is exactly what happened. By the time it closed in 2001, over 6.2 million people had seen “Cats” in Hamburg. The foundation for a unique success story had been laid.

Today, Hamburg is the third-largest musical city in the world after New York and London. With four major Stage theatres and a number of smaller venues, the Hanseatic city attracts around two million musical fans every year – from Germany, Europe and all over the world. Whether long-running classics, German premieres or local culture: Hamburg’s offering is unique and has something for everyone.

The major musicals in Hamburg: What’s on where?

The Lion King – Stage Theater im Hafen

Hamburg’s most famous musical has been running continuously for over 20 years at the Stage Theater im Hafen: Disney’s “The Lion King”. Since then, over 15 million visitors have experienced the story of Simba, the lion prince, who reclaims his place in the eternal cycle of life following the betrayal by his uncle Scar. The production is a visual masterpiece: elaborate animal costumes, impressive puppets, colourful sets and the rousing music of Elton John and Tim Rice transform every evening at the theatre into an emotional experience. The show runs from Tuesday to Sunday – with no performances on Mondays – featuring evening and matinee performances at the weekend, and is often fully booked months in advance. So if you know when you’ll be in Hamburg at the weekend, it’s best to book your tickets early.

The theatre itself is located on the opposite bank of the Elbe from the Landungsbrücken – and the journey there is an experience in itself: Stage Entertainment offers a dedicated ferry shuttle service from the Landungsbrücken, which takes visitors straight to the theatre. Those who wish can enjoy the sunset over the Elbe with a drink on the adjacent Musical Boulevard before the performance.

Disney’s Tarzan – Stage Theater Neue Flora

Tarzan has been back in Hamburg since 12 November 2025 – after a hiatus of more than a decade. The new production at the Stage Theater Neue Flora on Holstenstraße once again brings that breathtaking combination of aerial acrobatics, an emotional story and the unforgettable music of Phil Collins to the stage. Tarzan, an orphan raised by apes in the jungle, must choose between two worlds and ultimately finds his anchor in humanity in the form of the explorer Jane. The show is running for a limited season in Hamburg before ‘The Devil Wears Prada – The Musical’ takes over the Neue Flora from December 2026. So anyone wishing to see Tarzan should make the most of the remaining time – and tickets should be secured well in advance.

Back to the Future – Stage Operettenhaus

On 15 March 2026, the Broadway musical *Back to the Future* celebrated its German premiere at the Stage Operettenhaus on Spielbudenplatz – right on the Reeperbahn. Anyone who loves the cult film of the same name from the 1980s will be bathed in nostalgia here: Marty McFly and Doc Brown, the flying DeLorean and hits like “The Power of Love” – all of this is now coming to Hamburg as a thrilling stage show. The Operettenhaus has a long history of musicals, making it a particularly fitting venue for this production, which captivates with spectacular stage magic and genuine 80s flair. Its location right on Spielbudenplatz also makes it particularly easy to round off the evening afterwards in one of the surrounding bars or clubs.

MJ – The Michael Jackson Musical – Stage Theater an der Elbe

Straight from Broadway, the award-winning show “MJ – The Michael Jackson Musical” is coming to the Stage Theater an der Elbe. The show delves deep into the life and music of one of the greatest entertainers of all time – from his first steps on stage to his global career. Moonwalk, Thriller, Billie Jean: if these names give you goosebumps, you’ve come to the right place. The theatre is also situated on the banks of the Elbe and is easily accessible by public transport.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – Theater am Großmarkt

Not a traditional musical in the strictest sense, but a show that is in a league of its own: “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” will run until summer 2026 at the Theater am Großmarkt in Hammerbrook. The play – the eighth instalment of the Harry Potter saga – offers never-before-seen special effects, hands-on magic and a stage experience that has already thrilled over a million Hamburg audiences. So if you still want to see it, you’d better hurry: from autumn 2026, “Moulin Rouge! – The Musical” will take over the programme following further refurbishment of the theatre.

Heiße Ecke – The Reeperbahn Musical – Schmidts TIVOLI

For anyone who prefers something smaller, more authentic and with genuine Hamburg Kiez flair: “Heiße Ecke” at Schmidts TIVOLI on the Reeperbahn. This cult Hamburg comedy has been running since 2003 – and has now been seen by over three million people. In the space of one evening, you experience 24 hours in the Kiez centred around a fictional snack bar. Colourful, loud, charming, funny and thoroughly Hamburg-style. The show is ideal for anyone wanting to party on the Reeperbahn after a night at the musical – or simply looking for something down-to-earth that shows why Hamburg is so special.

Coming soon: Moulin Rouge! and The Devil Wears Prada

For those already making plans for autumn 2026 onwards: the world-famous musical “Moulin Rouge!” opens on 28 October 2026 at the newly refurbished Theater am Großmarkt – the story of Christian and Satine, Parisian nightlife and rousing songs are set to make their Hamburg debut. And from December 2026, “The Devil Wears Prada – The Musical”, featuring new songs by Elton John, will bring opulent glamour and biting dialogue to the Neue Flora.

With its seafaring charm, its own bar and the legendary “Frühstücks-Flagschiff”, this hostel is an experience in itself – and for anyone who doesn’t want to go to sleep straight after the musical, you won’t have to go far. Schmidts TIVOLI with its “Heiße Ecke” is practically on the doorstep, as is the Stage Operettenhaus with “Back to the Future”. If you want to soak up the energy of the neighbourhood, the a&o Hamburg Reeperbahn is the perfect place for you. a&o Hamburg Hammer Kirche

A little quieter, but no less cosy: the a&o Hamburg Hammer Kirche is located in the Hamm-Mitte district, around 3.8 kilometres from the city centre. The smallest of the four a&o Hostels in Hamburg boasts a friendly, family-like atmosphere and offers good public transport links to the city centre. Ideal for anyone who wants a good night’s sleep after a long evening out and to explore the city at a leisurely pace the next day. Rooms from €18 per night.

Plus: children stay for free in their parents’ room, making a family musical trip to Hamburg even more affordable.

A musical weekend in Hamburg – here’s what it could look like

A musical weekend ideally begins with arrival on Friday evening or Saturday morning. After checking in at the a&o Hostel, it’s worth taking a stroll through the city centre: from Jungfernstieg via Gänsemarkt to Mönckebergstraße – Hamburg’s shopping mile with its numerous shops and cafés. Those who prefer atmosphere to shopping can stroll through the Schanzenviertel with its small restaurants, vintage shops and cosy bars.

In the afternoon, we recommend a visit to the Speicherstadt – the red-brick district near HafenCity, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015 and is easily accessible on foot or by train. Miniatur Wunderland, the world’s largest model railway project, is also located here and is particularly worth a visit for families. Alternatively, the Elbphilharmonie invites you to a guided tour or a concert: from the publicly accessible plaza at a height of 37 metres, you can enjoy one of the most beautiful views over Hamburg.

Then, in the evening, the highlight: the musical. Depending on the venue, it’s best to allow some time for the journey – for The Lion King, for example, you take the ferry from the Landungsbrücken, which makes the experience a memorable one even before the first note is played. After the show, a nightcap is a must: the Portuguese Quarter near the Landungsbrücken offers small, cosy restaurants for a late evening with wine and tapas. Those who have chosen the Reeperbahn as their base can simply stay in the neighbourhood.

Sunday is dedicated to seeing a different side of Hamburg: early risers head to the famous fish market at the Landungsbrücken at 5 am – one of Germany’s liveliest markets, where the whole of Hamburg society comes together amidst fish sandwiches, fresh fruit and market criers. Those who prefer to sleep in can explore HafenCity in the morning or take the underground to the lively Karolinenviertel, which boasts street art, design shops and cafés.

Tips for planning your musical trip

Tickets for major productions such as “The Lion King” or “Back to the Future” should be booked well in advance – popular performances, particularly at weekends, are often sold out weeks or months in advance. Tickets are available directly via the Stage Entertainment websites or through popular ticketing platforms. Performances usually start in the evening at 7.30 pm or 8 pm; on Saturdays and Sundays, there are also matinee performances in the afternoon.

If you want to travel as cheaply as possible, combine the a&o Hostel offer with the Hamburg CARD: This is available on a daily or multi-day basis and offers free travel on public transport as well as discounts on many attractions, museums and leisure activities in the city. It’s also worth checking out the a&o Club: as a free club member, you can secure up to 25 per cent off hostel stays – and put the money you save straight towards a better category of musical ticket.

Hamburg makes a musical weekend easy: the city is compact, well-connected and full of energy – and with the four a&o Hostels in Hamburg, you have the ideal base. Curtain up!
